You’ve wanted to improve your financial literacy for a while. Right now, you have the perfect opportunity - November is Financial Literacy Month in Canada!
We’ve decided to kick off Financial Literacy Month with a challenge: What’s one thing you can do to improve your finances?
We’re talking about actions you can take today to make a difference. Choose from any of the ideas below and commit to making a change.
Let’s get started!
1. Compare credit cards
Is your current credit card the best fit for you, or could you be earning better rewards1 with a card more customized for you?
You can use our Credit Card Picker to find a card that suits your needs. Whether that’s a lower interest rate2, travel rewards*, or cash back rewards*, we’ve got a card for you.
2. Figure out your monthly expenses
Are you on track to save money? The only way to find out is by checking the numbers.
You can do that by regularly reviewing your credit card and bank account statements.
Find out how much money is flowing in and out of your accounts each month, so you can budget with confidence.
As a Cambrian Member, here’s how to find your statements through Online Banking and the Mobile App.
Find a few costs you can cut right off the bat. Things like:
- Eating out. We all need to eat – but the convenience of takeout can quickly impact your budget. Check out our meal prep and grocery shopping tips.
- Bank fees. Why pay service fees when you can bank for free at Cambrian? You can save up to $234 (or more) in service fees every year. To qualify, all you need is a monthly direct deposit in your Cambrian personal chequing or savings account. Open your account today!
- Wants vs needs. When you’re reviewing account statements, which expenses are purely optional? Consider cutting down those costs to free up more room in your budget for debt repayment or saving.
3. Start contributing to an emergency savings account
A recent Statistics Canada survey revealed that 1/3 of Canadians don’t have an emergency fund sufficient to cover 3 months of expenses.
Why is an emergency fund so important? It helps you cover the costs you don’t see coming, so that you don’t have to rely on credit.
Credit products are helpful in a pinch, but you’ll end up paying interest on the funds you borrow. An emergency fund helps you cover costs in full so that you don’t have to pay interest.
You can also set up a sinking fund, which is like an emergency fund, but for planned expenses. It’s a savings account you contribute to over time, so that when the expense comes up, you have the funds to cover it.
4. Seek financial advice from a Cambrian Advisor
You don’t need to navigate your finances alone. An advisor can help you:
- Look at your debt management options. Dealing with credit card debt? Maybe you have an outstanding loan that you want to pay off. A Cambrian Advisor can help you navigate debt consolidation.
- Open a registered savings plan. What are your financial goals in the next 5, 10, or 25 years? Chances are, there’s a registered savings plan for that. For example, a FHSA helps you save for your first home, a RDSP helps you save for the future of someone with a disability, and an RESP helps you save for your child’s education.
- Get started on your retirement plan. Many people tense up at the mention of retirement planning – it might seem confusing, stressful, or ambiguous. We can help you get started with retirement planning.
- Talk about investments. If you’ve paid off high interest debt and established an emergency fund, you may have room in your budget to start investing! A Financial Advisor with Aviso Wealth can help you get started with investments tailored to your financial goals.
