Housing affordability is one of the biggest challenges facing Manitobans today. In our community, there is a growing need for social housing. For every 20 people in need of housing…
To support the community, Siloam Mission opened The Madison, a social housing facility with 85 private rooms. The Madison houses people who are transitioning out of homelessness and need support before they can live on their own.
Cambrian is proud to partner with Siloam Mission, a non-profit that helps people in need – including those who are experiencing homelessness, poverty, and mental health challenges.
Our support helped fund critical renovations for The Madison, including repairs to its failing HVAC system. We met with Darren Nodrick (Director of Development) and Ken Loxton (Resident Relations Coordinator) from Siloam Mission to tour the newly renovated building and learn more about the importance of this project for the community:
The Madison provides housing and support services for people with nowhere else to turn. Many people who call The Madison home live with cognitive challenges, physical impairments, or mental illness. For some residents, it’s their forever home.
Residents are served three meals a day in a shared dining space. There’s a strong focus on community building, with on-site staff and case workers. Since many of the residents are older adults, there are also plans to add home care.
Cambrian’s donation helped pay for the renovations this building needed, including a new HVAC system, flooring, lighting, paint, and furniture. These upgrades have transformed The Madison into a more comfortable, dignified, and welcoming home for its residents.
Your surroundings affect your wellbeing, and The Madison was overdue for some TLC.
The main force driving these renovations was the building’s aging HVAC system. The heating system was breaking down and at risk of failing. There was no air conditioning in the building, which made summer months uncomfortably warm for residents.
The walls and floors also needed work after years of wear and tear.
A house should feel like a home, and these renovations helped The Madison become just that for its residents.
Through the support of organizations like Cambrian, Siloam Mission was able to make the necessary upgrades to the building. This included an overhaul of the HVAC system, which fixed the heating system and added air conditioning. Renovations also included freshly painted walls, new flooring, and a renovated dining and kitchen area. The residents helped choose colours for the doors and trim on each floor.
