Inclusion Selkirk is a non-profit organization serving Selkirk and the Interlake area. They are committed to building an inclusive community so people with intellectual disabilities can lead full, productive lives.
They do this through their group homes, providing learning opportunities, building employment skills, and facilitating adult recreation activities to help build social skills.
Throughout the year, Inclusion Selkirk organizes various events to support the community. They host community events such as the Golf for a Cause Tournament, Holiday Alley, Homes for the Holidays and the Halloween Decorating Contest.
Inclusion Selkirk also runs two social enterprises that work towards earning a profit and providing volunteer work placements for people living with intellectual disabilities. These enterprises support their vision of a fully inclusive community.
The two social enterprises are:
Wishme
Formerly known as Community Threads, Wishme provides work placements for people who want to gain experience in retail and train as cashiers or as customer service representatives and inventory clerks.
Volunteers develop relevant experience they can use to acquire another job in the retail industry.
Riverside Grill
This enterprise also provides volunteer work placements for people living with intellectual disabilities. The volunteers train to work in the kitchen as waitresses or in customer service. They learn what they need to know about the restaurant industry.
Cambrian has been a proud supporter of Inclusion Selkirk, who is also a Cambrian member, for over 11 years.
Each year, Cambrian participates in several Inclusion Selkirk initiatives. For example, in October, we participate in Inclusion Selkirk’s Halloween decorating contest as part of the panel of judges. The decorating contest was born in 2020 to keep Inclusion Selkirk’s housing residents engaged and in the holiday spirit. “The group homes are so entrenched in the Selkirk community that you can’t really tell they are group homes,” said Craig Giesbrecht, Regional Sales Manager. He represented Cambrian on the panel of judges for the Halloween decorating contest for the second year in a row.
“Giving back to the community is an integral part of who we are. I am proud that Cambrian supports an organization committed to bettering the lives of those living in Selkirk”. - Craig Giesbrecht
Merilee Mollard, who oversees fund development at Inclusion Selkirk, shared that Cambrian’s funding supports various projects currently underway to improve accessibility and increase capacity in the group homes.
